Tax year 2026. Rates and references last verified September 3, 2026. Optional self-employment tax uses the same Schedule SE rates as the self-employment tax calculator; marketplace fees are user-entered or cited platform defaults in page copy. Checked against SSA 2026 contribution and benefit base, IRS 2026 Self-Employment Tax and Deduction Worksheet, lines 4 and 9–11, IRS Schedule SE filing requirements and IRS TD 9645 / IRC §1401(b)(2). How is this calculated?

Platform and processing fees each apply to the gross client payment you enter. Net after fees is gross minus both fees. When you turn on the self-employment tax estimate, the tool runs the same 92.35% Schedule SE earnings factor and 2026 Social Security and Medicare rates as the self-employment tax calculator on that net—not on the original gross. Effective keep rate is what remains divided by gross, using net after fees only when SE tax is off.

What does this calculator answer?

You see how much of a client payment remains after marketplace fees, an optional processing fee, and—if you choose—an estimated self-employment tax on the net. The headline numbers are platform fee, net after fees, and keep rate. It does not model income tax, state tax, business expenses beyond the payment itself, or currency conversion.

Who is this Fiverr and Upwork fee calculator for?

Use it when you need take-home on one marketplace payment before you quote or book the job. Typical cases:

  • You sell on Fiverr and want the 20% seller-fee preset, then net after fees and keep rate on that order.
  • You invoice on Upwork and need to enter the contract service-fee percent instead of guessing one national rate.
  • You are comparing Fiverr, Upwork, and a direct client on the same gross payment.

This is not a Schedule C explainer. If you need whether Upwork or Fiverr fees are tax deductible, read whether Upwork fees are tax deductible. That article owns the marketplace-fee write-off. Keep this page for the payout math.

Is this a Fiverr fee calculator?

Yes. Choose the Fiverr (20%) preset. The model uses Fiverr’s published 20% seller service fee on the order total, matching Fiverr’s pricing help (accessed 2026-09-20). You see platform fee, net after fees, and keep rate on that payment. Optional processing and an optional self-employment tax estimate stay in more options.

It is not a Fiverr-owned payout tool, and it does not replace your order receipt. Promotions, Fiverr Pro, or a later policy change can differ. Confirm the current help article before you quote.

Is this an Upwork fee calculator?

Yes. Choose Upwork and enter the freelancer service fee percent on that contract. Upwork is not one national rate. Upwork’s freelancer service fee help (accessed 2026-09-20) describes a contract-variable fee; the common range in that article tops out at 15%, which is why the control caps there.

You still see platform fee, net after fees, and keep rate. Use the percent on your contract or earnings report. Do not assume 10% or 20% because another job used that rate.

What is net after fees versus keep rate?

Net after fees is the client payment minus the platform fee minus the processing fee. Keep rate is what remains divided by the gross payment—net after fees when the self-employment tax estimate is off, or cash after that payroll-tax estimate when it is on.

A $500 Fiverr order with no separate processing fee has a $100 platform fee, $400 net after fees, and an 80% keep rate. That is take-home before income tax.

How does the calculation work?

Your platform fee is the gross payment times the marketplace rate. Fiverr uses a 20% seller service fee in this model, matching Fiverr’s pricing help (accessed 2026-09-20). Upwork and Custom % use the percent you enter; Upwork contracts are capped at 15% in the control because that is the top of the common freelancer service-fee range described in Upwork’s freelancer service fee help (accessed 2026-09-20).

Your processing fee is gross times the processing percent you enter—use 0% when the marketplace bundles payout costs. Net after fees is gross minus platform fee minus processing fee.

When you turn on the self-employment tax estimate, the tool treats that net as net self-employment profit and applies the 2026 Schedule SE earnings factor of 92.35%, Social Security tax up to the $184,500 wage base, Medicare tax, and Additional Medicare Tax when your filing status and other W-2 wages trigger it—the same registry figures as the self-employment tax calculator. The tax year and last-verified date above the calculator come from the same rates registry.

How does a worked 2026 example look?

Suppose a client pays $500 on Fiverr with no separate processing fee and you leave the self-employment tax estimate off. The platform fee is $500 × 20% = $100. You keep $400, so your effective keep rate is 80%. The one-line summary reads: “Of $500.00 on a Fiverr order, you keep about $400.00 after the 20% seller fee.”

If you add a 2.9% processing fee on the same gross payment, processing is $500 × 2.9% = $14.50, net after fees is $385.50, and the keep rate falls to 77.1% before any tax estimate.

When should you use this calculator?

Use it when you need a Fiverr or Upwork fee calculator for one payment—platform fee, net after fees, and keep rate—not a full annual return. Use the deductible article when you still need Schedule C reporting. Then price the gross you must charge with the freelance hourly rate calculator. Separate payroll tax from income tax with the self-employment tax calculator. Plan installments after you know both layers with the quarterly estimated tax calculator.

Which mistakes should you avoid?

  • Treating the marketplace fee as your only cost while forgetting payment processing or chargebacks.
  • Assuming one Upwork percent fits every contract instead of reading your earnings breakdown.
  • Confusing this payroll-tax estimate with federal income tax or quarterly safe harbor.
  • Comparing a Fiverr gross to a direct-client net without putting the same fee assumptions on both sides.
  • Relying on a snapshot fee policy after a platform changes pricing—recheck the help articles.

What should you remember about fees and tax?

Marketplace fees change. Upwork’s percent is contract-specific. This page is not tax advice. The self-employment tax line is a Schedule SE–style payroll estimate only; it ignores deductions, credits, and state rules. Confirm current Fiverr and Upwork terms before you sign or quote.

What can you read next?

  • are upwork fees tax deductible — Are Upwork and Fiverr fees tax deductible in 2026? Yes on Schedule C when they earn freelance income. See gross vs net and the live fee example.

What else should you know?

Is this a Fiverr fee calculator?

Yes. Choose the Fiverr (20%) preset to apply Fiverr’s published seller service fee, then read platform fee, net after fees, and keep rate on that order. It is not Fiverr’s own payout tool, and promotions or Fiverr Pro can differ.

Is this an Upwork fee calculator?

Yes. Choose Upwork and enter the freelancer service fee on that contract. You still get platform fee, net after fees, and keep rate. Upwork is not one national rate, so do not assume the percent from another job.

Does Fiverr always take 20%?

Fiverr’s published seller service fee is 20% of the order total for standard marketplace sales. Promotions, Fiverr Pro, or future policy changes can differ. Confirm the current help article before you rely on a quote.

Why is Upwork’s fee not fixed here?

Upwork’s freelancer service fee depends on the contract and client relationship. Enter the percent shown on your contract or earnings report instead of assuming one national rate.

What is net after fees and keep rate?

Net after fees is the client payment minus the platform fee minus any processing fee you enter. Keep rate is what remains divided by that gross payment. When the self-employment tax estimate is on, keep rate uses cash after that payroll-tax estimate.

Does this include federal income tax?

No. The optional self-employment tax line is payroll tax only—Social Security, Medicare, and Additional Medicare when triggered. Income tax, state tax, and deductions are outside this tool.
